Research File System (RFS) account:

At IU all faculty members and graduate students are eligible to apply for a RFS account, which gives you 10GB of storage space. This extra space would be very helpful to save large sound files. The files on the RFS are accessible on every computer on campus.

To apply for a RFS account:

1.      Go to http://itaccounts.iu.edu

2.      Click on “Manage my IU computing accounts

3.      On the left panel, click on “Create more accounts”

4.      Select “RFS” to create.

5.      If you don’t see the option of RFS, then send an email to valid@indiana.edu . The staff of UITS will manually create a RFS account for you. In the email be sure to mention that you are a graduate student or staff member and also give your IU network ID.

To access your RFS account:

  For Windows:

1.      Right click on “My Computer” icon on the desktop.

2.      Select “Map network drive”

3.     In “Folder”, type \\rfs.iu.edu\username (replace ‘username’ with yours) and then click “Finish”. Assign a label to your RFS drive other than W, which already exist on the PC machines in the lab.

4.      A dialog box asking for your IU network ID and password may pop up, just type in yours as usual.

5.      Your RFS account then should be accessible and could be seen in My Computer.

For Mac OS X: (The instructions can be found at http://kb.iu.edu/data/arxp.html)

  1. In the Finder, from the Go menu, select Connect to Server.
  2. In the Connect to Server window, in the "Address:" field, type: smb://rfs.iu.edu/username

Replace username with your username. Click Connect.

  1. You will be asked to authenticate. In the Workgroup/Domain field, type ADS. Type your username and password in the appropriate boxes.
  2. Click OK. Your RFS folder will be mounted on the local drive shortly and can be seen under shared space.

Monitoring subject's performance

In case you need to monitor your subject's performance while they are recorded in the booth, you may use the headphone that is plugged into the EDIROL sound capture device. If you need to talk to your subjects during recording, you may use the microphone attached to the headphone that is plugged into the COMPUTER so that subjects can hear you.  Briefly, to hear what subject is saying, use the headphone connected to the EDIROL sound card. To talk to your subject, use the headphone with mic connected to the COMPUTER.

E-Prime

  1. If you need to use E-Prime, please inform either the lab director or assistant in advance to get the license key (a hardware USB type plug-in key needed to program a script in E-prime).
  2. Before scripting in E-Prime, be sure to plug in the license key to one of the USB ports. Otherwise, E-Prime won’t allow you to create or modify any experiments!
  3. To create or modify an experiment, open E-Studio.
  4. To run an existing experiment, open E-Run. (E-run can be operated without the license key).
